Spring/Summer Book Discussion:
Tim Tyson's memoir "Blood Done Sign My Name"
Please join us at 2pm, Saturday, June 11, 2011 at the church
The Church in the Meadows Book Group will engage in a discussion of Tim Tyson's memoir "Blood Done Sign My Name" on Saturday, June 11, 2011.
CIM member Neil Sherouse will lead the discussion. He had this to say about the book. "I was directed to this book by our daughter, Beth,
who had met the author at the annual meeting of the Southern Historical Association. The book is a memoir that reads like a novel--a brutal
racial murder woven through Tyson's upbringing in North Carolina during the latter years of the Civil Rights Movement. It tells the story of
Tyson's father, a courageous Methodist pastor, who navigated the minefield of tension and institutionalized racism in the southern church.
Tyson manages to craft the story in such a way as to keep the reader with him to the last page. Since its publication in 2004, the book has
gained a loyal following, and received a good bit of critical attention. The film version, starring Rick Schroeder, Nate Parker, and Omar
Benson Miller, was released in 2010. Tyson holds the PhD in history from Duke University and currently serves on its faculty as Senior
Research Scholar at the Center for Documentary Studies. He also holds secondary appointments in the Duke Divinity School and the Department
of History. One word to CIM members and friends: Don't be put off by what you think may be a dry, historical tome. This book is a page-turner,
and will drag you along at break-neck speed."
